Prayer and Meditation

Regardless of your religious or spiritual beliefs, studies show that prayer and/or meditation can lower blood pressure, reduce stress and relieve pain. Spending just 10–20 minutes each day focusing on whatever is meaningful to you can help you relax, find balance, and regain a sense of control in a chaotic world. I have found this to be true, both personally and professionally.

Vitamins and Supplements

Although I am not a big advocate of vitamins and supplements, there is some evidence to suggest they may be helpful in managing headaches. Certainly, I have no problem with taking a daily multivitamin for overall health, since we could all use some help getting the recommended daily allowances of many nutrients. I would, however, recommend staying away from megavitamins, protein supplements and energy boosters, which may do more harm than good.

Minerals such as calcium and potassium, which may be part of a daily multivitamin, have been beneficial to some headache patients. There is also evidence that magnesium and riboflavin (vitamin B2) may reduce the frequency and severity of headaches. Coenzyme Q10, which is a nutritional supplement, has also been effective in lessening migraine attacks in some patients. However, use of these supplements can require patients to add several pills a day to an already-full pill regimen; therefore, I designed a capsule that contains all three entities, magnesium, riboflavin and Coenzyme Q10. One or two capsules a day supplies the necessary levels of all three. See the References section at the end of the book for more information on this vitamin capsule.

Vitamin B12, in the form of hydroxocobalamin, when taken intranasally (nasal spray), can also be helpful. However, before you begin taking any vitamin or supplement, consult with your physician for the proper combinations and dosages, particularly if you have other health concerns. As far as herbal supplements and all-natural remedies that promise to “cure” your headaches, my advice is to steer clear of them. There is no magic cure for headaches. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
